For 2005-2007, Michigan ranked 41st in the country (with 50th being worst) for violent crime rate. In 2008, Michigan improved to 35th. Michigan has been closing the gap between the national violent crime rate and its own, but continues to have a higher rate than the national average of 454.5 violent crimes per 100,000 in 2008. Illinois, which has been hovering slightly above Michigan in the ranking for several years, dropped to number 40, while Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota continue to rank far above Michigan.
