HOME OWNERSHIP

According to the Housing Vacancy Survey, the homeownership rate in Michigan declined to 75.9 percent in 2008, from a high of 77.4 percent in 2006. Delaware (76.2 percent), Utah (76.2 percent), and West Virginia (77.8 percent) were the three states ranking higher than Michigan. Michigan ranked 2nd in 2006, and 3rd in 2007.

According to the American Community Survey, Michigan witnessed statistically significant declines in the homeownership rate since 2006. The 2008 rate for Michigan was only 74 percent, but the state still managed to come in at number two in the country, just below Minnesota.
